I Spy: Trends for Less

Let's face it, we just spent all of our money buying books for the fall semester, but we still have this overwhelming desire to keep up with fashion trends. The good news is it's totally possible to keep up and save money. Here are the trends I'm loving for this fall.

Denim

Who says you can't wear denim on denim? Whether it is a dress, a button down, a vest, a jacket or a pair of jeans, denim is in. But before you go buy a jean jacket at Urban or Forever, check out Goodwill or Thriftsmart. These places are denim gold mines. Here's a tip though, we can't all get our vests from the Goodwill in Berry Hill so branch out. I've been going to the one on Charlotte since high school and it's got the good stuff; plus, you can cross the street when your done and get a milkshake from Bobby's Dairy Dip and who doesn't want that?

Nasty Gal "Chambray Block Shirt" $48, Wet Seal "Medium Wash Denim Shirt" $24.50, Forever 21 "Distressed Denim Jacket" $28.90, Nasty Gal "Acid Dream Dress" $58

Peplum

Peplum is definitely a trend you want to take part in this fall. It's everywhere, on TV, on the runway and on the streets. It just gives your average outfit an extra kick and it does wonders for your curves.

ASOS "A Wear Heart Peplum Top" $36.22, Delias "Ana Short-Sleeve Peplum" 2 for $25, Forever 21 "Peplum Bodycon Skirt" $15.80, ASOS "Peplum Dress In Spot" $22.42

Grunge

I'm really all about the 90s grunge comeback this season. This is where my outfit essentials come into play. Boots and a leather/jean jacket go with everything. This is also the perfect opportunity for you to wear that over-priced band tee you waited in line for tucked into some high waisted shorts. For the full how-to on 90s grunge, check out my posts from earlier this summer on my personal blog, I Am.

Wet Seal "Combat Boot" $39.50, Wet Seal "Coated Moto" $32.50,  Forever 21 "Polka Dot Denim Shorts" $15.80, Urban Outfitters "Flutter Sleeve Cami" $9.99

We are two Belmont students, Jamie and Ashley, looking for fashion clarity in a town of honky-tonk and cowboy boots. There are definitely things to borrow from honky-tonk couture and we'll take you there and well beyond in  "Scattered Foxes." That's our new Nashville fashion blog that will offer a hodge-podge of thoughts and findings among today's fashion essentials. Fashion is both achievable and affordable in Nashville.

Here are just a few of our own staples:

Jamie: My staples are just a few essentials for any outfit. A pair of worn, black combat boots adds a subtle edge to the outfit — and they're extremely durable for anything the day might bring, rain or shine! Bright red lipstick creates a more vintage look, 170 by Rimmel London is a great stain but stays matte all day. Last, the T-shirt is a great and cheap craft I made on a day off. Amazing what a T-shirt from the thrift store and a pair of scissors can do!

Ashley: My three favorite pieces in my closet are my leather jacket, my high waisted cut-offs, and my brown We Who See Fringe boots. The high waisted shorts are super easy and inexpensive to make. Just grab a pair of mom shorts from Goodwill for $4, cut them off, and use a pumice stone to age them.
